Choosing Your Metal

Our intention has always been to produce jewelry-quality pet ID tags. To achieve this goal, we have made all our designs in two materials: sterling silver and bronze.

There are significant differences beyond appearance between these two metals, and we ask that you consider some factors beyond appearance when choosing the most appropriate metal for your animal companion.

In a nutshell, bronze is stronger and more durable than sterling silver. For this reason, we recommend bronze for everyday wear for active dogs and silver for their strut wear. If your animal companion doesn't routinely roughhouse, silver is a great choice.

Please be aware that metal buckle collars are not advised with our tags. These buckles are large and made of steel. The result of steel constantly hitting bronze or silver will definitely negatively impact your tag over time.

Regardless of which material you choose, please be aware that additional tags hanging next to your Steampup tag will increase the likelihood of scratches and wear on your Steampup tag.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds (also called lab created, engineered, synthetic or cultured diamonds) have the same optical, chemical, and physical properties as earth-mined diamonds. We prefer them because no mining is required, making them an environmentally responsible choice.

Our lab-grown diamonds are certified from GCAL (Gem Certification and Assurance Lab) and are made by a combination of CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) processing methods. First, the CVD process is used to grow the diamonds from a chemical reaction of distilled carbon gas and a seed crystal. This is followed by the HPHT method which involves the application of high temperature and pressures to improve the color.

Engraving Tips

We use diamond drag engraving for the text on your tag; it's the only method that cuts it for us. This method is an actual mechanical cut into the material, which we prefer to ensure a long life for the text on your tag.

For maximum readability, we use a five-line engraving font as seen in the example below.

Each size tag has a set number of lines for engraving, each with a recommended character limit. We understand that in some circumstances an extra character or two is needed. Please be aware, however, that to accommodate additional characters font size may reduce. Larger tags allow for more information to be engraved. Below is an image that compares the small, medium, and large sizes.

Please note you do not need to use all the available lines. If you do use fewer lines than the template offers the font will increase in size.

We are often asked what could be put on our tags. The answer is really anything that does not exceed the technical limitations of the engraving template. Some people order engraved pieces for themselves to wear with their favorite quotation. Some people order engraved pieces with their animal companions' names so that they can wear them close to their heart. And, of course, many people order engraved pieces as pet ID tags with information to help ensure the safe return of their loved ones.

If you are looking at ways to reduce the number of characters for us to engrave, please keep in mind that abbreviations--like St for street and # for unit or apartment--go a long way toward saving your character count.

If you have any questions regarding the layout of text for your tag, please don't hesitate to contact us. We can often accommodate special requests.
